Casady Wyckoff, Materials Science Engineer/Metallurgist

"I graduated from J. W. Sexton High School in 2005, and then studied at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I majored in Materials Science & Engineering (received a Bachelor's of Science in Engineering), and took all of my technical electives in the Aerospace Engineering department. If you don't know what Materials Science is, think Chemical Engineering but with solids instead of liquids and gases. What different metals / polymers / ceramics do we mix together, and how do we process them, to get the properties (strength, ductility, etc.) we want? While in undergrad, I worked in lab on campus studying single crystal nickel superalloys (for airplane turbine blades), interned at Andersen Windows & Doors, and interned for a small start-up that made solid oxide fuel cells. After undergrad, I took a year off to decide if I wanted to continue into engineering or work in non-profits (I volunteered for multiple organizations in Lansing that year). I ultimately decided on engineering, and got a job as a metallurgical engineer at DENSO, a large Tier 1 automotive supplier. DENSO is a Japanese company, but I worked at their North American technical center in Southfield, Michigan supporting production issues stemming from metallic raw material, field failures, and alloy development. After a number of years at DENSO, I had fallen in love with failure analysis and materials characterization, but my heart wanted to be in Aerospace. I was hired at The Boeing Company in 2015 as a Paints & Coatings engineer, doing early stage research on paints / coatings and associated manufacturing processes at their Charleston, South Carolina Technical Center. As of January 2018, I am the manager of the Paints & Coatings research group consisting of 20+ engineers and technical analysts. Instead of working on problems that make airplanes easier to build or increased functionality, I now support other engineers in achieving their project deliverables and reaching their career aspirations."

Kimberly M. Tyson, Environmental Engineer Specialist

As an environmental engineer, I evaluate proposals to cleanup soil and groundwater contamination, to store and treat hazardous waste, and to fund financial mechanisms that the state of Michigan may access should companies fail to perform their obligations for managing hazardous chemicals.

I graduated from Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee where I was born and raised.  I received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a minor in Mathematics.  While in college, I interned with Buckeye, Inc.  My duties included identifying hazardous chemicals in the manufacturing plant and making sure the chemical containers had the proper labeling.  I also developed a safety program and trained the plant employees.

After working several years in my job, I received my Engineer-In-Training certification and later received a Professional Engineer License in the Environmental discipline.
