I graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia earning a Bachelor of Science Degree with a concentration in Biology. I later obtained a Master of Science Degree with a concentration in Biomedical Sciences from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. I am currently seeking admission into medical school in order to obtain my Doctorate of Medicine Degree. Although I have taken a long and unorthodox route in pursuit of medical school, I have obtained the knowledge which will allow you to take the path with less resistance to college, a degree in biology, and medical school. I love music, dancing, and cooking, You have to enjoy life, stressing out is an obstacle!" Contact us here to become Jemetrius' mentee! |
Ashley Newby, Lecturer at Stanford University
"I am a single mother and Hip-Hop education scholar who focuses on the ways that education and Hip-Hop intersect on multiple levels. After participating in a summer research program while in James Madison College at Michigan State University, I decided that I wanted to study Ebonics (Black Language) and the ways that it affected student academic achievement. So following obtaining my B.A.s at MSU in International Relations and Social Relations and Policy, I started an MA program at New York University in Sociology of Education. While in New York, I worked with the Hip-Hop Education Center and researched the ways that Hip-Hop culture influenced student lives and could be used in the classroom. I went on to obtain a PhD at Michigan State in African American and African Studies where my research focused on a Hip-Hop Academy in Lansing, MI. Ashley I teach at Stanford University in the Programs of Writing and Rhetoric and FemGen Studies, where my courses center Hip-Hop music and culture. It is my belief that bringing the student voice and experience into the classroom is the best way to keep school relevant and reinforce student identity." Contact us here to become Ashley's mentee! |
Angelica Leigh, Ph.D Student
"I am originally from Farmington Hills, MI and I graduated from Michigan State University in 2006 with an undergraduate degree in Finance, while at MSU I also became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. After college, I moved to Milwaukee, WI and I worked for five years in different corporate finance roles at GE Healthcare. While at GE Healthcare I had the opportunity to not only grow as a professional but also mentor and help other new employees by leading the summer internship program at GE Healthcare. While I really enjoyed GE and the people I worked with, ultimately I knew that working in corporate finance was not my ultimate purpose in life. After attending the PhD Project conference, which is a free conference for under-represented minorities interested in pursuing a Ph.D. within a business discipline, I decided that I wanted to become a professor at a university. I left GE about 3 years ago to pursue my Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior (Business management) at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. While at Carolina I have completed graduate level classes in organizational behavior and psychology and I also taught a section of the undergraduate intro to organizational behavior class last fall. Currently I am working on developing my dissertation research which will examine the influence of societal events such as police shootings, the election, and the Charlottesville, VA White nationalist rally on people at work. When I am not working on my research I am either binge watching a Netflix show or having fun tap dancing with a local professional tap group in North Carolina."
